1789 is a short chamber larp set in the French Revolution, vaguely inspired by Arthur Schintzler’s play The Green Cockatoo. It takes place on the fatal night of 14th July 1789. Along with the theme of the revolution it also opens the questions of human guilt and lust for vengeance.

The Green Cockatoo is a tavern where a diverse hotchpot of Parisians was driven by the ravaging crowds. There are poor workers and students along with rich nobles and citizens. It is just a matter of time until the hot-tempered spirit of revolution arrives to this cellar as well.

What can I expect

Dark cellar, few tables set rather quickly and a few bottles of shortage wine. This is the scene for interpersonal drama of 14 Parisians. In the same way the streets will be deciding about the future of France, will this cellar and the people in it decide about their own guilt and ability to forgive. Will the cellar under The Green Cockatoo become a place of cruelty and lynching or will the humanity prevail tonight? That is up to you.

What will it look like

Before the game you will receive one of the characters who are hiding in the cellar under The Green Cockatoo. It is up to you whether you want a character that is with the revolution or against it – you have the possibility to try both. After you choose your character, we will provide you with a historical costume to fully enjoy the atmosphere of the era.

The game itself will last for about three hours. We will spend another forty-five minutes after the game with joint reflection.

Documents

Although historical facts are just a setting for this larp, it would be good to have a basic overview about the contemporary situation. It is not about the accurate data, it is about the state and mood France was in. Therefore, please consider reading the following short article.
